from the Introduction:
“My fourth
child, Anne Flynn Bowe, was born in May of 2001. Six weeks later, in July of
2001, my mother, Dorothy Jeanne Flynn, was suddenly diagnosed with an aggressive
and terminal cancer at the age of 63. Over the next several months Anne and
I virtually lived at the Mayo Clinic, watching my mother slowly fade out of
this life and into the next. Anne never got to know the grandmother who wore
wild hats, drove a convertible, marched to classical music, and played a mean
game of tennis, but even in the depths of her illness my mother's indomitable
spirit showed through.
My older children,
Cady, Cully and Christopher, knew Gran as the spark in every day. Gran taught
them that life was God's playground, and she reminded all of us to laugh, play
and enjoy life, despite its sure struggles. She brought that spark of life and
joy to many in her time here on earth. Her favorite holiday was Easter when
she would joyfully dig into the earth of her garden, reminded of the resurrection
and of the truth with which she lived her life - there is no death! At the time
of her passing my sister Kate said that she felt the earth contract in her leaving,
as the heavens expanded in a joyful hallelujah at her arrival. My mother brought
that energy of expansion to everything she did. She was our teacher in death
as she had been in life - teaching us to expand our perceptions as we watched
her passage across that sacred threshold.
Since my mother's
passing, I have told Anne funny and life-filled stories about her Gran, wanting
to pass forward to her the life and energy of this incomparable spirit. One
night, following a Gran story, I told my three-year-old Anne to go to sleep
and have a dream with Gran. As Anne drifted off to sleep she instructed me to
follow her in her dream, for she knew the way to Gran. I agreed. A moment later
she opened her eyes and asked if we should take our bodies with us in our dream.
I told her we could leave our bodies in bed to rest when we left in our dream.
She agreed. A minute or so later she opened her eyes again and told me that
she was taking her face with her so Gran would know who she was. Before drifting
off to sleep Anne opened her eyes one last time, and she very deliberately said,
"Don't lose me, Mom. I'll lead you there."
In a dream that
night I woke up hearing this poem in full form. In the dark I wrote it down,
just as I was hearing it in the dream. I believe that Anne did lead me to Gran
in our dream that night and that this is Gran's message for us all: "There
is no death, so follow your hearts and enjoy life in all its wonder!" My
children have definitely been a force in leading me back from the well of grief
to the wonder of life, and deeper into my connection with soul and Spirit. My
mother has strengthened that connection through her life and through her death,
and the boundary between life and death has softened through our experiences
of Spirit.
It is my belief
that we are all being called to know that those we have deeply loved are truly
"just around the corner," holding us in our struggles, celebrating
our victories, and waiting for the time when we will remember that we are all
souls, working and playing together for the evolution of the planet.”
