When CNE awards this Seal of Excellence to books and products, one of the criteria each has to meet is that it must help to foster an attitude of kindness and compassion for all life and nature. We have found this criteria in two of the books we have received from Boyds Mills Press.
Both My Name is Jorge by Jane Medina and My Name
Was Hussein by Hristo Kyuchukov will foster within your children an understanding
about the fear and prejudice that many children in the world today are facing.
My Name is Jorge: On Both Sides of the River explains in poetic form in both Spanish and English how Jorge is trying to learn the ways of a new country and fit in at a new school without forgetting his homeland, Mexico. “I wish my language didn’t sound like dirty English words” will cause you to consider, and hopefully teach your children, the thoughts and feelings of all those who live within the diversity of America.
My Name Was Hussein tells of a young Muslim boy from a small village in Bulgaria whose family is forced by the soldiers who come with guns, tanks, and dogs to give up their identities and choose Christian names. This is a story of racial and religious prejudice, which, if heeded by parents and children alike, could change the face of our world. This story is based on events in the life of the author, Hristo Kyuchukov.

Offspring of a Deathless Soul by Beth Nonte Russell

 There are few novels that actually capture my soul and cause my spirit to rise, but Offspring of a Deathless Soul did just that. I couldn’t leave this book alone and still, to this day, find myself thinking about it.
This is a story of love and redemption where you will travel across lifetimes and continents to a place where nothing is as it appears to be. With interweaving stories of the adoption of a baby in modern day China and the flashbacks of a previous life in Ancient China, you will be haunted by one question: Is this a novel or a true story?
And never before in a novel would I turn down the corner of a page to go back and re-read time and time again a passage that still floats in my spirit.
“My child, each decision that you make carries with it the seeds of joy, or the seeds of despair. You have made a choice which will be of a magnitude undreamed of by you at this time. The blessings are yours by this choice, and will be kept for you forever in the vaults of heaven, and rain to you on earth as such time allows.”
