Remington
Writes the Real
"Graduation"
By
Remington Bennett
GRADUATION!
FINALLY A HIGH SCHOOLER! A
freshman. It wasn’t that long ago when I was in elementary school.
I remember when I was younger,
I thought that it would be so different going into high school. I also thought
that “I” would different. Truth is, I don’t feel different
at all, To be honest, I thought it would be a piece of cake transitioning
into to high school. But now that it’s here, it is somewhat frightening.
It’s no more playtime it’s time to get serious. I have to be more
disciplined and determined. Besides, I go to college in four years, even more
of a scare. But while I’m feeling scared, I also feel excited.
Going through all this change
is of course going to need some getting used to, but I realized there’s
no reason why it can’t also be fun. If you think of it as a board game,
it makes a tremendous amount of sense. You start off at the start line. Every
time you roll the dice, you move a block. But at the same time, you don’t
know how much you will roll. Each time you land on a particular block, it
may either say, lose a turn, go back three spaces or go ahead two spaces.
So no matter where you go, there is going to be some type of obstacle to overcome.
And the path of the game board may zig-zag, turn and sometimes just goes straight.
But despite all the obstacles you can always reach your goal or the “finish”
line, unless you choose to give up. That’s a different story.
So no matter what grade you’re
moving on to, instead of worrying when you begin to feel the goose bumps,
think of your board game, and how board games can be fun. I’m sure I’m
not the only one feeling a little unsure about moving into a different environment.
But if we think this new journey is going to make life fun, it will. So bring
on the journey, because I’m ready.
ABOUT
THE AUTHOR
REMINGTON
BENNETT is 13
years old and currently an 8th grade student at Archer School for Girls
in Los Angeles. Remington’s love for writing was discovered at the
tender age of 8. She began writing class assignments, which often were read
in front of the class. In the 5th grade, the speech she wrote for the D.A.R.E
program was one of two out of 100 essays chosen to be read at the completion
ceremony. In her after-school acting class, the monologue she wrote on the
environment was chosen and performed by a professional actress, as well
as her short play “Flip Chat” was one of the feature scripts
read by the “Theatre 40” theatre group in a staged reading.
Remington is also the Junior Reviewer for “Children Of The New Earth
Magazine.” Remington is no stranger to the performing arts. She has
performed in such plays as Grease, Little Shop of Horrors, and CATS to name
a few. Remington had a supporting-role in the soon-to-be-released feature
film “Contradiction Of The Hearts.” She is also part of the
new positive hip-hop recording group, “4Tru”. Besides writing
and performing, Remington enjoys tennis and swimming, and is the older sister
to twin 9-year old brothers.
