Boldness Really Does have Genius, Power and Magic in It...
The Continuing Evolution of CosmiKids™
by Judy Julin
CosmiKids Principle #3
Courage: When we unburden ourselves from the
weight of fear, we are free to move in any direction.
“Central Casting could not have come up with a more perfect character to run CosmiKids than you, Judy.”
I took this comment as an extreme compliment, especially coming from Don Boroian, chairman of one of the world’s largest and most successful franchise companies. When I first met with Don to discuss building CosmiKids into an international franchise operation, he asked who was going to run the company for me.
“I am,” I said. God had given me a second chance and I knew I would have everything I needed to be an effective CEO.
“What?” He laughed out loud. “You don’t have a background for it.” Here we go. Another who-do-you-think-you-are look.
“I don’t care,” I responded, nonchalantly. “One of THE most important things to me is to birth and ground this business along the lines that I envision.”
It took a while to prove to him that I was the exact right person—which is why his Central Casting comment was so luscious.
How do you know if you can do something unless you try? And in this case it was more than one try. I knew that I was the one to bring this idea to market. Otherwise, why would it have come to me a second time with such clarity, familiarity, excitement and draw? Once in the marketplace, with the foundation established, it could be developed and nurtured by others. The essence of this idea for children welled up within me like a fountain of possibility. I knew that it was right for me and I was happy and wiling to give my complete focus to learning and doing whatever it took to bring it to its rightful fruition. I just needed to find my courage.
If we think we can do something, or dream we can do it, as Goethe once said, we only need to begin it. The first step may take a little guts. Close your eyes and jump. And expect magic to occur. I’ve always been drawn to the life and times of Albert Einstein, Walt Disney, Stephen Jobs, Madonna and the CEO’s of various innovative start-ups. They have all displayed an element of unconventionality that so intrigues me. When I read about people like that, it inspires me to be my bold self regardless of what others may think. Sometimes being a little daring provides entrée into opportunities that I wouldn’t have been given otherwise. But the point is not to get noticed. The juice is in coaxing a creative inkling into the light of day, watching it flourish any which way it wants to. When I’m in that unbridled space, I’m not thinking about the so-called consequences. Those pesky who-do-you-think-you-are responses come soon enough. I’m at my best in that space, fearless and free to create in accordance with my inner urges. I feel protected and guided by a larger source. It’s quite joyful, almost surreal. If one were to explain what it feels like to be in the hands of God, I would say that most closely describes those magical, nourishing times.
Even if it doesn’t give me a certain desired result in the outer world, the juice has already been squeezed from the experience. So it’s a win-win. Besides, being audacious is so, so fun for me. At least I can say that my life is anything but boring. Like the time as a young girl when I wrote to Bobby Darin and asked him to meet me so he could see first-hand the Judy he wrote about in, Judy, Judy Don’t Be Moody. Or when, fresh out of college, I had business cards printed up stating simply my name, public relations and my phone number underneath it. I had no idea what that meant, in its entirety, yet it sounded good and glamorous to me and I wanted to give it a whirl. It got me entrées, albeit short-lived, into the biggest and best ad agencies in Pittsburgh, I was clearly in the running when they requested writing samples, because I could articulate well and carried an air of almost infectious enthusiasm and excitement with me. Or, when I invited Johnny Depp and Prince to be a part of building the CosmiKids dream team . . . Okay, the final word is still out on that one.
“What you can do, or dream you can do, begin it!
Boldness has genius, power and magic in it.”
