Young Mystics Vs. Old Mysticism by GW Hardin & Mark Muller
Great change is upon us. This is no more evidenced than with the young Indigos I work with who are usually in their 20s. A key ingredient in my work is acknowledging that these young folks find great treasure in what I call Elders — men and women, usually over fifty, who know themselves and the powers they carry. These Children of the New Earth (who I like to call the Quantum Generation), place unexpected value on wisdom and those who walk in wisdom. An important ingredient in my work with these 20-year-olds is taking them to a place of self-empowerment that I prefer to call an “Awakening.” This empowerment is an important stage at which they shed the norms of society to finally accept themselves as well as their unusual gifts. Usually, the Awakening is surrounded by a dramatic event — some being struck by a powerful bluish-white light, others being hit with an unleashing of emotions that cannot be stopped for a stretch of time, and still others being visited by angels or beings from another dimension, announcing that their time for being who they are has arrived.
Not long after an Awakening, I start looking for these young men and women to enter into what I call their “Remembrance.” Oftentimes, after several months of training and struggle, the Awakening and the Remembrance unleash within them knowledge and information that is ancient, yet forgotten, or ideas completely foreign to our time and our world. I believe these kinds of events are increasing steadily. Perhaps it is time for more people, more Elders, to assist these young mystics in sharing their experiences with those camped out in ordinary reality. With that in mind, I’d like to introduce one of these young adepts, a twenty-four-year-old named Mark Muller. Space does not allow for going into Mark’s story — that’s for another article on another topic. But what I would like to point out is that Mark is coming forth with new information on an old form of mysticism.
Mark’s Awakening and blossoming Remembrance leaves him to describe himself thusly: “When people ask me what I do, I call myself a shamanic journeyer or shamanic healer. There’s really not a better word or phrase for it. ‘Shaman’ is a catchall phrase that carries too many connotations to give much of a concrete description of my work. The word ‘shaman’ comes from the people of the Tungus River Valley in Siberia. Translated literally, it means, ‘one who sees in the dark.’ I think this is an excellent place for me to start because I see into other worlds, often easiest at night, where others might only see obscurity. This skill and gift is vital to a world in desperate need of a new vision.”
New Myths to Define Classical Shamanism
Notice how this young adept tries to define himself in a new way with old terms. I am seeing more and more of this with the Quantum Generation. Through their Remembrance, they are bringing forth new information about what might be considered classical mysticism. Mark is a good example. Look how he uses what Joseph Campbell called “new myths” to redefine classical shamanism: “Shamanism, though it has some distinct methods, overlaps with other types of healing. For instance, the information I retrieve for a client through the journey, may look a lot like a psychic reading. Through metaphor, I am shown where a person is in their life journey, what blocks need to be cleared, and what some good next steps might be. The only difference between this and a psychic reading is that I journey into metaphor to get the information rather than just channeling it. Also, in doing healing, I may be guided to do energy work. It can involve acupressure or emotional release points yet I don’t call myself an energy worker. I simply do what I am guided to do and, usually, it turns out to be exactly what is needed whether or not I understand exactly what is happening. Often, the individual’s guides or my spirit guides and helpers will literally come through me to do the work. I’ll simply hold space and allow it to happen. I hold the intention that only those helpers of the client’s highest good come through, then I release attachment and trust the process. The result speaks for itself. This is similar to etheric surgery.
“The question of what to call myself is tricky. I choose the words ‘shamanic healer’ with good reason. It isn’t necessary to call myself a shaman per se. Actually, such labels can be a liability because many labels have attachments to their meaning. I try to avoid this trouble. Power takes whatever form it needs to serve the whole.”
The reason why I draw attention to this phenomenon stems from another idiosyncrasy I see in this Quantum Generation: the kids with whom I work innately come from Oneness. They have within them a core recognition that all of life is One. Notice how Mark is taking classical shamanism and dressing it up in a communion of modalities that serve the client best. He is not attached to outcomes but trusts in the Oneness. That is where the solution lies. Consequently, he is not attached to getting certification from a shamanic institute, nor does he require of himself certification in any other modality. Indeed, his world is a communion of modalities that moves in and out of a given event depending on what is best for the client. And who decides what’s best for the client? The Oneness. This is the hallmark of the young mystics I am seeing nowadays. The old mysticism, even that from the ancient mystery schools, does not work for these young mystics. And I think those of us hanging out in ordinary reality ought to pay attention. Here is why.
Mark states the following about our rapidly changing world: “I am a dreamer who sees the world in layers of metaphor. Our society has lost the ability to dream new visions. We need modern-day mystics to birth new dreams. That is why I and others like me are here — to expand the vision of what this culture, this society, this reality can be. The (shamanic) journeyer expands the vision on an individual level and a community level. By reintroducing an individual to a larger dream of who that person is, the shamanic journeyer helps the whole community’s dream expand.”
Dreaming a New Reality
And there we have it. This Quantum Generation, these Children of the New Earth have begun to dream a new reality. The question that comes up for people like me is whether they are operating out of mysticism or the new quantum physics. For these young mystics, it doesn’t make any difference from where they operate. Their Remembrance does not require them to place a tack on a map or put forth definitions. They simply trust who they are and trust the gifts that dwell within them. For they know that what moves through them is not definable. It is the Oneness, the Spirit of the All and the Everything. To them, there is no single modality. There is only the communion of modalities which all may partake. And how does one partake? By simply creating a space, allowing a possibility, inviting a young mystic like Mark to touch their lives with his own trust — trusting in them, trusting in himself, and trusting in the Oneness.
Mark concludes, “Whatever you choose to call the visionary who dreams and heals through the metaphor of the spirit world, this method and this medicine is vital to the transformation and survival of the planet at this time.” And he means it. I, for one, would like to support him. Are there others like Mark? Yes, many. Stay on the lookout for these young mystics. For they most likely dwell under your very own roof.
