Today’s children face
far more challenges than we did as kids. From our governments to our boardrooms,
to our health services, corruption, mismanagement and lack of human consideration
and care are rampant in the world today. If we want to create a safer, healthier,
more peaceful world for our children, it has to start with the way we parent,
nurture and educate our children. And it has to start NOW!
Each Sunday, the Inspired
Parenting Radio Show on the World Puja Network will be bringing you everything
you need to know to support your children in achieving their full individual
potential as healthy, resilient, compassionate, emotionally intelligent human
beings. To listen to any of the interviews with the following guests, please

Barbara Probst: When the Labels Don’t Fit -
A New Approach to Raising a Challenging Child
Barbara
Probst is a licensed clinical social worker specializing
in “difficult” or “different” children and their
families. She teaches at Fordham University's Graduate School of Social
Service and gives presentations to parent and professional organizations
throughout the country. Her articles have appeared in numerous publications
including the Child and Adolescent Social Work Journal, Journal
of Teaching in Social Work, Families in Society, Journal
of Therapeutic Schools and Programs, and the Twice-Exceptional
Newsletter.
In her new book , WHEN THE LABELS DON’T FIT: A New Approach to Raising
a Challenging Child Barbara proposes a radical new perspective: instead
of viewing unusual or puzzling behavior as a symptom of an underlying disorder,
we need to view it as exactly what it is: the extreme or out-of-context
expression of a trait like perfectionism, intensity, or curiosity. Barbara
Probst has devised an easy method for profiling children’s behavior
and more than 60 strategies for dealing with specific kinds of behavior.
Topics include:
-
With 1 in 5 American
children meeting the current criteria for having an ‘emotional
disorder’ what’s happening to our concept of “normal”?
-
Why it’s important
for parents to consider temperament when they’re dealing with
real-life situations?
-
How to get to the
real source of difficult behavior
-
Why many problems
stem from conflict between temperament and environment, not from temperament
itself
-
What often seems
like a “problem” can actually be the seed of a child’s
potential for authenticity and fulfillment
Sunday
8th March, 2009 – Wendy Priesnitz: Life Learning: Lessons from the Educational
Frontier
Wendy
Priesnitz is a book author, award winning journalist,
editor, former broadcaster and mother of two adult daughters. She is the owner
of Life Media, which she co-founded with her husband Rolf in 1976 as The Alternate
Press to publish books and Natural Life magazine. Trained as a school teacher
in 1969, Wendy quickly rejected the factory model of processing children and
became an early proponent of experience-based, self-directed learning. She
founded The Canadian Alliance of Home Schoolers in 1979 as a national support
and advocacy organization that kick-started the homeschooling movement in
Canada, cooperating with John Holt as he breathed life into a parallel movement
in America. In 1987, Wendy is the author of School Free – The Homeschooling
Handbook, which is now in its fifth edition and has become a bestselling
classic around the world, and Challenging Assumptions in Education
is a controversial look at what’s wrong with public education and at
the need to de-school society.
Her work in politics and journalism has given Wendy an understanding of the
environmental and social dangers inherent in the globalized corporate mindset
and of the transformative power of local small business. In the mid 1980s,
she began to help life learning families create home-based businesses –
as she and Rolf had done a decade earlier in order to unschool their own daughters.
So she founded The Home Business Network, a source of advocacy, information
and support for home-based businesses. Her book Bringing it Home –
A Home Business Start-Up Guide for You and Your Family was published
in 1996 and is still helping people balance work and family life.
Topics include:
-
Why our assumptions about children and education aren't preparing them for
life in the 21st Century
-
What
“life learning” is, why it’s growing in popularity and
how it differs from stereotypical homeschooling,
-
How
life learning fits into natural parenting, and its significance for individuals
and society in the 21st Century
-
What
can happen when children are allowed to personalize and control their own
learning
-
Some
things parents need to know in order to found their own home-based business
and start ‘unschooling’ their own children. (www.wendypriesnitz.com.)
