The Wailing

 Ever
since she made a promise to her granddaughter in 2000, Australian Actionist
and Granma, Kerry Bowden, has become globally recognized for her efforts to
make it a better world for children by the year 2015. Her latest initiative,
‘The Wailing’ was launched on March 8 to coincide with International
Women’s Day.
The project has been created to support mothers all over the globe whose children
are dying every day as a result of war, violence and inhumanity. The hub of
the project will be online, with The Wailing website acting as a forum of healing
space for women to unite, express their compassion and share their grief. Men,
too, are of course invited to participate. Bowden is a firm believer in the
power of the internet and its ability to connect people. She envisions The Wailing
as an annual global event and wants as many people to participate as possible.
“They don’t have to physically be there with me,” she says.
Bowden invites participants to express their ‘wailing’ in their
own way. “If people can take a photo of the dawn that day or write something
down, we can make a collage and put it on the site. It’s for each person
to decide how they go about it.”
Bowden sees the website as a potential healing space and says, “Mothers
who are in pain will be able to go on to The Wailing site when they are feeling
down and know that there are other women around the world who are thinking about
them. People need help to grieve.”
Ultimately Bowden hopes the energy of the day will be carried forward beyond
just being a once a year event. “Over a period of time every single day
of the year will be taken up by women doing that - waking up with that thought
for others.”
Bowden has this message to share: “So that the wailing vibrates unceasingly
around the world, I want to fill the yearly calendar with the names of mothers,
women and caring males who will be wailing with others on this day. This will
be like placing a warm blanket around the shoulders of the mothers who have
lost their child to our inhumanity. While we may not be there with them in the
flesh, we are there with them in Spirit. I want them to then know that everyone
whose name is on this calendar is pledging to work to make it a better world
for all children. We may not have been able to save their child, but we can
all work to stop it happening to other mothers like them.”
