Families of Costa Rica DVD
From Families of the World Series
Reviewed by Erin K. Allshouse

No passport is required for this DVD. Sit back and armchair travel into the lives of two friendly families who live in Costa Rica, without ever leaving your living room. This is the latest DVD in the multi-award winning series, which continues to explore the lives and cultures of children around the world. The series includes 19 titles and growing and offers a documentary style, “day in the life,” glimpse into how people in different countries live from a child’s point of view.

You are invited into the lives of these families, one rural and one urban and can follow them in the daily activities from waking to bedtime, while showing that kids living thousands of miles away in other countries lead everyday lives and participate in daily activities very similar to American children.

Ten-year-old Estibaliz is a happy little girl growing up in Cabuya, which is very close to a national nature reserve and has a thriving eco-tourism business. Her day begins very early with a few morning activities including breakfast (tortilla, eggs and hot dogs) and some last minute homework. Follow her to school and be part of her classes. Visit her parents at work. Her mother works as a housekeeper and her father as a groundskeeper for a local hotel. Estibaliz attends a private school, studying English, geography, science, math and history. She also enjoys eating lunch with her friends and playing in the school band. After school, watch Estibaliz do her chores and study with her mother including picking up fallen mangoes from the yard and feeding them to the neighboring cows. The next day, walk with her to a nearby island during low tide and later in the evening attend an exciting soccer game, followed by a fun community dance.

Later we meet Jose, a ten-year-old boy, who lives in Escazu, near the capital of San Jose in Costa Rica with his parents and 3-year old brother Gabriel. Jose also starts his day early, enjoying an egg sandwich for breakfast, followed by Bible study with his father (they’re Evangelical Christians), and then it’s off to private school for him as well. Because his family is building a new home, the trip to school includes a stop to borrow his grandfather’s truck to pick up construction supplies. At school, classes, include science, art, computer and math. Jose likes to conducts experiments and practices soccer. Upon returning home, he walks his dog Sophie, plays music with his brother and does his homework, which includes writing an essay on what he wants to be when he grows up – a professional soccer player for Team Barcelona! Take in the colorful local market as he walks along with his mother and visit the family as they eat sushi made by the family’s housekeeper. Then it’s off for a well earned good night’s sleep.

I recommend this DVD for 4-to-5 year olds through 11-year-olds for viewing. Take time to share with your children how children from other cultures live. It is 30 minutes long and is in color, with live action, closed-captioned and subtitled in English and Spanish.

This DVD offers an intriguing taste of another culture and is used in classrooms around the country as a valuable tool for multi-cultural education. All 20 Families of the World episodes include: Families of Australia, Families of Brazil, Families of Canada, Families of China, Families of Costa Rica, Families of Egypt, Families of France, Families of Ghana, Families of India, Families of Israel, Families of Japan, Families of Korea, Families of Mexico, Families of Puerto Rico, Families of Russia, Families of Sweden, Families of Thailand, Families of UK, Families of USA, Families of Vietnam.

Families of Costa Rica is available for $29.95. To order, call 1-800-765-5885 or visit www.familiesoftheworld.com.
