Meditation and the New Kids: The River
by Jeannine Proulx

Does your child refuse to sit still? Does he or she seem to want and need to be constantly entertained to the point where you often find yourself turning on the TV simply in order to gain some quiet time for your self? You are not alone. In this new age of the techno-kid generation, children's brains are moving at a faster and faster pace, ready to absorb more information than our adult brains can fathom. Even as it feeds them so much information, however, today's technology is also robbing them of opportunities to participate, thereby leaving them useless in their own lives.

Guided meditations are a wonderful way to calm the minds of these very high maintenance children. It offers them a story form that keeps them interested and aware, while allowing them the freedom to create their own experiences and stories. The children are allowed to travel through the labyrinth of their minds to find their own inner silence and truth which helps them not only relax and unwind, but to live a life full of possibilities that they themselves have created. The same meditation can be used everyday and the experience will be different each time!

Come join us as we offer this next generation the opportunity to create their own world and their own lives!

To set the scene, find a quiet, comfortable space and time. Bedtime or afternoon nap is ideal. Keep the lighting soft and still, play soft music if you wish and read out loud slowly. Know that breathing is critical to relaxation, so remember to not only tell your child to breathe, but to do so yourself! This is for you as well as for them. For by helping ourselves, we help the children. And by helping the children, we help the world.

The River

Close your eyes and breathe in deeply, slowly letting out all the stress, fear, worry and negativity of your life and day. Breathe in again, picturing a beautiful white light coming down through the top of your heard, filling your lungs, your belly, your legs and out through your feet into the floor, grounding you to Mother Earth, connecting you to Higher Realms.

All is well. All is right. You are as you need to be.

Relax and breathe deep.

Now picture in your mind's eye, a beautiful flowing river next to a gorgeous meadow of green. Smell the air, moist with the river scents and the grassy green, flowers rare. There are no allergies here.

Breathe the cleanliness of this air deeply into yourself, and as you exhale imagine yourself walking toward the river.

What do you see? What do you feel?

How big is the river? How deep? What colors present themselves? In the air? In the water?

You are meeting someone here. They are an old friend. Who is this person? What does he or she look like?

Animal or person? Angel or fairy? Guardian or gatekeeper?

Ask this being their name and occupation. Listen. Ask if they have a message for you. Listen again.

And as the sweet sounds of the babbling brook draws you away from your friend. Say good-bye.

You travel on along the river. Do you slip your feet into its cool warmth or do you avoid getting wet by the water?

Listen to the river. What does the river tell you?

Are there birds nearby? Squirrels or raccoons? Animals of the wood that came to welcome you? What do they have to say?

Can you hear them? Or feel them? (Sometimes without seeing them we know they are there.)

The river comes to a point where it merges at a dam. How big is the dam? Is it a Beaver Dam? Or the Hoover Dam?

The noise from the river grows louder. Does it call to you? Or push you away?

What color is the spray from the water? Does it hit your face, or play in front of you like a motion picture? Are you one with the water? Or do you stay away?

How do you feel?

The water grows calm at the foot of the river. Walk beside it now and feel its love, feel the love of the angels beside you, around you, above you, leading the way.

Do they have anything to say? How do they make you feel? What color are their wings if any at all?

Keep walking. Feel the earth beneath your feet, the pounding of the ground.

You are loved. You are safe. You are back where you started from. You are supported now and always.

This experience becomes a part of you, and you can always come back to this place. Anytime you need to feel safe, loved, surrounded in the place of those who honor you.

Know this. Remember this.

Now slowly wiggle your fingers and toes, bring your consciousness back to the sounds in this room.

Feel your body, your mouth, your nose, as you inhale and exhale and when you are ready, slowly open your eyes.

Remember and record.
